Coimbatore organisations come together to save ‘Uyir’ on roads

Coimbatore: Various industrialists, businessmen, doctors and social service organisations are coming together to make Coimbatore accident-free. ‘Uyir’, the new forum will work on various fronts with senior government officials here. Chief Minister Edappadi K Palanisami will be inaugurating ‘Uyir’ on 27th October here.
Talking about the initiative, Sanjay Jayavarthanavelu, MD of LMW and Chairman of Board of Trustees of Uyir said, “It is the responsibility of every citizen to make our roads accident-free. Uyir is the brainchild of Dr. S Rajasekaran from Ganga Hospital and like-minded people from the city have come together to make Coimbatore an accident-free place.”
“Road accident deaths in Tamil Nadu match the death toll of Tsunami every year. 9000 lives are lost in road accidents in the State”, said Dr. S Rajasekaran, Managing Trustee of Uyir. Rajasekaran added, “India has overtaken China in terms of road accidents and the number of deaths per 1000 due to road accidents.”
Dr. Rajasekaran said that Coimbatore is ranked second in the State in terms of road accidents and 71 percent of accidents are happening due to the driver’s fault. “ 238 deaths occurred due to road accidents in Coimbatore last year and most of these deaths are due to driver’s negligence. Uyir is a public movement where we will be working on various fronts to reduce accidents in the city”, said Dr. Rajasekaran.
Dr. Rajasekaran mentioned that District Collector, Commissioner of Police, Corporation Commissioner and Joint Transport Commissioner will be honorary trustees of Uyir. Dr. Rajasekaran mentioned that they would be engaging student community through their ‘Kutty Cops’ programme.
Uyir will have six verticals to address various issues related to road accidents in the city. Vijay Mohan, Founder of Pricol and a member of the Industrial team of Uyir said, “In the first phase, we have selected 40 accident prone junctions in the city and 120 number plate reader cameras and surveillance cameras will be placed in these junctions. The 40 junctions are located across Avinashi Road, Mettupalayam Road, Trichy Road, Thadagam Road and Sathyamangalam Road. These junctions were selected after studying them for 18 months and 45 percent of accidents in the city occur in these junctions.” He added they would also be introducing intelligent traffic junctions and a mobile application to report traffic violation to the police in the future.
